POST-OP Q & A

Surgery Side Effects

As With Any Major Surgery, Liposuction Has Side Effects. The Most Common Ones Specific To Liposuction Include:

Edema & Swelling

Post-Liposuction Swelling Typically Reaches Its Maximum Around 48 Hours After Your Procedure But May Not Entirely Dissipate For Up To Six-Nine Months.

Bruising

Bruises Are Broken Down Cellular Debris And Old Red Blood Cells Stuck In The Tissues After Surgery.

Seromas

Temporary Pockets Of Fluid Can Form Under The Skin. This Fluid Is Composed Of Blood Plasma That Has Seeped Out Of Ruptured Small Blood Vessels And Inflammatory Fluid Produced By Injured Dying Cells.  They Are Not Hematomas, Which Contain Red Blood Cells. Serous Fluid Is Also Different From The Lymph.  Seromas Can Gradually Reabsorb Over Time.  This Can Take Days To Weeks Or Even Months. The Problem Of Waiting A Long Period Of Time Is That It Keeps The Skin Stretched And More Scar Tissue Is Created Underneath.

Fribrosis

After The Trauma Of Surgery Your Body Immediately Sends Immune Cells And Stabilizing Proteins To Heal The Area.  When These Stabilizing Structures, If Allowed To Build Up, Can Cause Lumps To Form.

Fat Necrosis

A Condition That Occurs When A Person Experiences An Injury To An Area Of Fatty Tissue. This Can Result In The Fat Being Replaced With The Oily Contents Of Fat Cells. The Term “Necrosis” Means The Cells Have Died. Fat Necrosis Feels Like A Firm, Round Lump (Or Lumps) And Is Usually Painless, But In Some People It May Feel Tender Or Even Painful. Fat Necrosis Usually Goes Away On Its Own In Most People. If It Doesn’t Go Away, You Can Have Surgery To Remove It.

Scaring

When A Surgery Is Performed Lymphatic Vessels Are Cut. Over Time, Lymph Vessels Will Rebuild. But As Scar Tissue Forms It Can Inhibit The Proper Function Of These Vessels, Resulting In Prolonged Swelling, Pain, Reduced Range Of Motion And Numbness.

Contour Irregularities & Lumpiness

Your Skin May Appear Bumpy, Wavy, Or Withered Due To Uneven Fat Removal, Poor Skin Elasticity And Unusual Healing.

Severe Itching

As A Response To The Wound That Is Caused During Surgery, The Body Begins To Naturally Produce Histamines; This Is, In Part, Responsible For The Itchy Feeling At The Incision Site Or Areas Of Lipo. The Use Of An Anti-Histamine, In Oral Form, Can Reduce Itchiness.

Signs & Symptoms of Possible Infections

After Your Procedure, It’s Important To Be On The Lookout For Signs And Symptoms Of An Infection. Call You’re Your Dr. Immediately If You Experience The Following:

  • Increased Redness At The Incision Site
  • Increased Warmth At The Incision Site
  • Foul Odor Coming From The Incision
  • Discharge Draining From The Incision
  • Fever Greater That 101.5f
  • Pain At Incision Site
